DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.
Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the
column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear
Webby Humor Letter.
This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly
because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

Tech Support Pits column from Dear Webby's Humor Letter of
04/22/04: Search Hijacking
Tech Support Pits:
From Connie at http://hicards.com===
Dear Webby,
An email from security@paypal.com showed up in my mailwasher
last night. I downloaded this to see what it was, but did
NOT click on the included link. And it still managed to
hijack the search feature on my browser. When I turned
on the computer (or rebooted), a search engine list ran
down the left side column of the opening page. I could
close that, but the next page I went to turned into a full
screen search list. The only way to close this was to shut
down the browser.
After spending all morning on this, I found the
CWShredder. This is a very small utility that specifically
removes search hijacks. It's also updated all the time to
remove the new variants when they come out - meaning
it stays ahead of Spybot S&D and Ad-aware updates.
It's a small download that works in a couple of seconds
to completely remove the hijack. You can find it here by
scrolling down to "Official Downloads".
