DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.

Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear Webby Humor Letter.

This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

Have FUN!

05/28/05: Is PayPal safe for merchants ?

Tech Support Pits:
From Craig=== Dear Webby, How safe is PayPal when compared to credit cards ? Thanks Craig Dear Craig PayPal is perfecly safe, both for consumers and for merchants. If there is a dubious payment, they will just hold that payment while they investigate and confirm it. They won't block your entire account and hold ALL your money, like for example Card Services International. Also PayPal's rates and fees compare quite favorably. Credit card systems have not improved in the last ten years, they just got a lot more expensive for merchants. It seems, every time you check, they have tacked on some other fee, and nowadays you have to budget about 5% for those miscellaneous fees and rates. With PayPal it seems to be the opposite. Their rates and fees remained stable, but every time you check, they have added some more features and goodies that make life easier for merchants. We still accept credit cards, but I can see the time coming where we will raise our prices 5%, and give PayPal users a 5% discount. The ONLY beef I have with PayPal is that their manual for merchants is an awkward 164 page PDF file with a hard to read and ugly font. It would be more civilized if it was in HTML and with a more readable font like Arial or Tahoma. Other than that, PayPal is quite OK. Have FUN! Dear Webby
