DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.

Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear Webby Humor Letter.

This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

06/21/04: Optical mouse feet

Tech Support Pits:
From Tanya=== Dear Webby, I have the optical mouse that you recommended a few years ago. Because of the environment I work in, the feet of it keep getting gummed up with dirt. That makes the mouse erratic and difficult to use. Because of the optics I don't want to spray any liquid cleaner onto the bottom of it. So, how do the pro's clean their mouse ? Dear Tanya As my friend Wayne, the optician, points out every time he gets half a chance to do so, paper is an abrasive cleaner in sheet form. Just lay down a fresh, clean sheet of paper, set the mouse on it near one corner, and with firm pressure drag the mouse to the opposite corner. You will see four skid marks starting off near black and getting almost invisible at the other corner. Turn the paper over and do it once more. Done, the mouse now has clean feet that slide smoothly, and the distance from the red laser to the table is correct again. Have FUN Dear Webby
