DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.
Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the
column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear
Webby Humor Letter.
This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly
because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

Tech Support Pits column from Dear Webby's Humor Letter of
07/08/04: Desktop clutter
Tech Support Pits:
From Sharon===
Dear Webby
I love your cactus pics. Keep them coming. Love the good
clean jokes too.
I have a couple of questions for you.
1) What do you know about the free antivirus programs such
as avast, av etc? Are they any good. My hotmail is scanned
by McAfee but I don't know if this protects other incoming
mail, attachments or mail I send out.
2) The other question is regarding pics that I have saved as
a desktop pic (not screen saver). I followed your advice on
getting pic of unwanted screen savers bur don't know how
to delete the desktop pic. Some of the pics I do use for
cards I print but they do not make nice desktop pics.
As always, thanks for your help. I am learning a lot thru your
tech dept. I really do like it.
Sharon
Dear Sharon
The free anti-virus programs are definitely better than
nothing, and from what I hear, better than Norton.
They are definitely a lot easier to UN-install than Norton.
The hotmail that is scanned before it gets to you does NOT
protect you from mail coming in via other routes. You still
need some decent anti virus protection.
I have used McAfee since it came on a 360 KB 5 1/4" real
floppy disk, and it has never failed to protect me. I have no
plans to switch to a different program that is not quite
good enough to sell or, that pays computer manufaturers
for installing it on new machines, like Norton does.
Re desktop clutter:
Right-click on the desktop
select NEW,
Folder
and change the name of "New Folder" to for example
"Landscape Pix".
Hit Enter.
Then drag all the landscape pictures into that folder.
Do the same for other topics until all the clutter is neatly
filed away, out of sight but within easy reach.
Have FUN
