DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.
Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the
column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear
Webby Humor Letter.
This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly
because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

Tech Support Pits column from Dear Webby's Humor Letter of
07/13/04: Trace connection problems
Tech Support Pits:
From Petra===
Dear Webby
How do I find out if a connectivity problem
is in my computer, the line to the ISP or beyond.
Thanks
Petra
Dear Petra
click on START
RUN
type: cmd and hit Enter
hat gives you the raw command line.
type:
tracert webby.com
and hit ENTER. Instead of webby.com you can type any
domain name you want.
The computer will then run a trace towards that domain
and show the times in microseconds of how long it takes
for each hop, from one router to the next.
If you see a star * , then the trace encountered a pothole,
some kind of problem getting to the next router.
Frequently it does get through to a router after a few tries,
however, keep in mind that stars that appear on hops after
that may actually be from going through that first pothole.
