DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.
Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the
column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear
Webby Humor Letter.
This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly
because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

Tech Support Pits column from Dear Webby's Humor Letter of
07/25/05: How good is Skype for Internet Phone?
Tech Support Pits:
From Mark===
Dear Webby,
How good is Skype for Internet Phone? Is it worth getting
it installed ?
Mark
Dear Mark
Well, for starters, Skype is free, has no ads and no
spyware. That means, even if you don't like it, you don't
lose anything.
If you have DSL, and the person you are calling also has
DSL and also has Skype installed, the voice quality is
quite a bit better than over regular long distance phones.
The system is financed by the NOT quite free Skype-Out
and Skype-IN. Skype OUT is for calling to people who don't
have high speed Interne and who have to be called on their
land line phonet, Skype-IN is for those people to call you
from a regular phone. Charges work out to under 3 cents
per minute.
If you have a long-distance lover who has DSL or cable,
get it.
If you spend a lot of time on long distance to customers
or relatives who have high speed Internet, get it.
You don't have to saw off your regular land line or cell
phone. You still continue using that. But it can reduce
your phone bills and improve voice quality.
If you get it, most definitely get a comfortable head-set
(head-phones and microphone combo) . They are cheap and
your voice does not cut out when you glance away from a
stationary microphone to for example a wall calendar.
Also keep in mind that a $4.95 head set won't provide
CD quality sound, but a $19.95 set probably will.
Wireless models are available, but those are generally
over $100 if you want one that has a decent reach..
