DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.

Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear Webby Humor Letter.

This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

Have FUN!

08/11/04: Modem Speed

Tech Support Pits:
From Lee=== Dear Webby, I am a 71 yr old novice. Im running windows 98. Its running 21600 Or 26400 With a 56K modum. I seem to be wasting a lot of time waiting. What would you suggust Lee Dear Lee Your modem is capable of that speed. However, your dial-up ISP apparently is not capable of supplying data at that speed. You can talk to your ISP, maybe they can improve their service or know of some tweaks that will help with their particular type of service. If your modem appears to speed up very late at night, then your ISP has more clients than they can handle with their current equipment. If your modem goes through a lot of rigamarole and tries different connection speeds, ( - you will hear it experimenting with different combinations of screeching noises -), then the phone line is bad. There is nothing you can do about ISP overload, but if it is a bad line condition, you can often get the phone company to improve your lines. Have FUN Dear Webby
