DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.
Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the
column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear
Webby Humor Letter.
This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly
because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

Tech Support Pits column from Dear Webby's Humor Letter of
08/24/04: Monitor flicker
Tech Support Pits:
From Mara===
Dear Webby,
My new 19" monitor has a faint flicker. It's not visible
right in the center, I notice it most when I don't look
directly at it. Should I exchange the monitor while it is
still under warranty, or do I have to learn to live with it?
Mara
Dear Mara
That is just the vertical sync setting of the monitor. It
is probably set at 60, the same rate at which your
fluorescent lights flicker.
Find the controls on the monitor. Nowadays that's just
three buttons. One of the many settings that you can change
is called "Vertical Sync". Change that to as far away from
60 as you can go. Personally, I find 73 the most
comfortable setting.
