DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.

Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear Webby Humor Letter.

This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

09/18/04: Wild Tangent spyware

Tech Support Pits:
From Sharon=== Dear Webby, I just wanted to thank you for a great humor letter and for making me laugh everyday. =o) Also, thank you for recommending SpyBot. However, everytime I run it, it keeps showing Wild Tangent. It doesn't matter how many times I fix it, it is always there...what can I do? Thanks for your help! Sharon Dear Sharon Wild Tangent is spyware installed and re-installed by AOL Instant messenger versions above 5.2. AOL needs to know your bra size and spending habits. Don't worry about it. AOL is only selling that info to spammers who pay for it, they are not giving it away. As long as you got AIM 5.2+ on the computer, it will re-install Wild Tangent. It's just AOL looking out for you and making sure that the spammers have your correct and up-to-date personal information. I would recommend that you get rid of AOL Instant messenger, or at least revert to version 5.2 or older, or else use Trillian or Miranda IM to send and receive messages to and from AOLers. Have FUN! DearWebby
