DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.
Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the
column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear
Webby Humor Letter.
This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly
because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

Tech Support Pits column from Dear Webby's Humor Letter of
09/20/04: Turning printers off or not
Tech Support Pits:
From Wilbur===
Dear Webby,
Settle an argument for us please.
Do you turn the power to printers off at night or not?
Do you unplug them if you go away for a week or more?
Thanks
Wilbur
Dear Wilbur
With moderns printers it's better to leave them on. Power
consumption in the automatic "sleep" mode is negligible,
maybe a penny's worth over the life span of a printer.
Turning the power to a printer off risks leaving the
printhead improperly parked and the head drying out. That
shortens the cartridge life drastically.
Since the power supply, that ugly plug that takes one and
a half spaces on the power bar, is usually remote these
days, the printer is isolated from power surges and
especially in sleep mode will not suffer from them.
Have FUN!
