DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.
Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the
column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear
Webby Humor Letter.
This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly
because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

Tech Support Pits column from Dear Webby's Humor Letter of
10/01/03: Defrag Problems
Tech Support Pits:
From Drew===
Dear Webby,
Please help me solve this puzzle. I can't defrag this electronic
wonder. It goes from 0% to 1% and back to 0% for hours on
end. I had it going all night and it was still in the same place.
What could be causing this? Please advise.
I depend on you every morning to get me started on the right
foot, now my computer needs you to get it going in the right
direction.
Thankyou
Drew
Dear Drew
The cause of that is just a well known "undocumented feature"
of Windows. Ever since Windows 3.1 people have been
complaining about the defrag having lowest priority and it getting
knocked off whenever ANYTHING happens, instead of stopping
anything from happening.
Luckily there are third party programs that do the job properly.
The best one of them is Diskeeper, from
http://diskeeper.com/downloads/menu.asp
(ONE "k" in diskeeper !)
That one is rock solid and works nicely in the background while
you continue working. It also has a "Set & Forget" feature, that
lets you for example tell it to do a defrag whenever the
screensaver comes on.
Instead of failing when the screensaver comes on like the
Windows defrag, it uses that as a start signal!
I am VERY happy with that program and wholeheartedly
recommend it.
Have FUN
