DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.
Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the
column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear
Webby Humor Letter.
This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly
because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.
Have FUN!

Tech Support Pits column from Dear Webby's Humor Letter of
10/26/04: Interrogation by Topica
Tech Support Pits:
From Jessie===
Dear Webby
I keep getting emails from Topica Customer Care wanting
me to update my information. Is this correct? Do I need to
fill this out to continue receiving some email subscriptions?
Is Dear Webby one of them? I don't like putting all of the
information they want down unless it's something I really
want and I'm not sure which ezines are connected with it.
I don't want to miss Dear Webby, but a couple of the others
wouldn't be worth it.
Thanks for all of the technical help. I've learned a lot from
it, but keep it up, please. There's SO MUCH more I need
to learn.
Jessie
Dear Jessie
First, I am not and never will be associated in any way with
Topica. Whether you fill out their spam order form or not,
will not make any difference whatsoever to your Humor
Letter subscription. I can tell from your sexy fonts that
you are cute, and I know that you are smart, because you
are a Humor Letter subscriber. That's all I need to know.
Keep in mind that those Topica spam order forms or
questionaires are not confidential info for Santa Claus!
No matter what they tell you, that info is for targeting
spam and junkmail.
Period.
On Topica's and similar outfit's spam order forms
you should always use a disposable hotmail or similar
address, never your good address!
It's also a good idea to be as creative as possible with
the answers. For example, if you tell them you are 12 years
old, then they can't legally sell your info to spammers
that push porno or viagra. And you are not a prime target
for back alley bank mortgages.
If they have an area for comments, tell them how you feel,
deep down inside, about spam, jalapeno yogurt, junkmail,
vanilla tofu, etc., and don't worry about being diplomatic.
Have FUN!
