DearWebby is actually Helmut Morscher, the CEO of Webby, inc.
Originally the "Tech Support Pits" were reports of the funniest tech support incidents, but over the years the
column gradually shifted to answering tech support questions put forward by the readers of the Dear
Webby Humor Letter.
This collection of computer and web advice was started partly because readers demanded an archive, and partly
because some questions were asked again and again. Each page has a different day's Tech Support Pits column.

Tech Support Pits column from Dear Webby's Humor Letter of
11/05/04: Picture download speed
Tech Support Pits:
From Sarah===
Dear Webby,
I noticed that on some sites pictures download a lot faster
than on some others, and slowest of all on mine. It's just
a fun site on geocities, but it's so slow that it's no fun
at all. What am I doing wrong?
Sarah
Dear Sarah
You are using unnecessarily huge pictures. There is no
point in using 1200 x 900 pictures and then forcing the
visitor's browser to re-calculate them to 400 x 300.
Resize them to the final size before you upload them.
You can gain even more speed if you use your graphics
program to compress them. Keep an original uncompressed,
but compress the copies that you upload by 10-15%.
Have FUN!
