How do i hide the icons so i have a nicer desktop
background? i'm using windows xp home.

A number of readers suggested this trick:
rightclick on the desktop,
click on "Arrange Icons By" and
take the checkmark off "Show Desktop Icons"
To bring them back, put the checkmark back on
